Levulan® is the latest development in skin rejuvenation. Based on your preparedness for some down-time during which the skin appears extremely sunburned, the peel can be more or less intense. The more intense the peel is, the greater the results in rejuvenated skin. It works with Amino-levulinic Acid “Levulan” which is a substance that occurs naturally in the skin.

The Levulan® Process
Levulan® is applied to your face and any other area where you would like skin correction, such as neck and décolleté. While the drug incubates, (varies from 30 minutes to several hours, based on recommendation of the physician), you can go and run errands, wearing protection from sun and light exposure. During the incubation period, Levulan® identifies all abnormal cells in the skin, such as actinic keratoses, photo damaged skin cells, hypo-pigmentation, and so forth. After an incubation period the peel is activated by exposure to the Blue-U Light source. This is what will cause the damaged tissue to peel off. The beauty of this peel is that it not also takes off abnormal skin cells, but also improves skin texture, acne/scars, fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, and is an overall skin rejuvenating treatment. Flaking and peeling during days 2-3, healing after 7-10 days. Dr. Weston will provide consultation about which peel might be best for you. Levulan® can help improve skin texture and eliminate the following:

  • wrinkles
  • lines
  • sun damage
  • acne
  • clogged pores
  • photo damage

The Benefits of Levulan® Skin Therapy
The benefits of Levulan® skin therapy can be found in its three equally important functional components. Levulan first combats the bacteria that cause acne inflammation, then exfoliates the skin to unclog pores, and finally disables the skin's sebaceous glands. This last ability is vital because prior treatments, such as Accutane, can have toxic and allergic side effects when treating the sebaceous glands, whereas the Levulan deep peel is a much safer alternative.

Additionally, Levulan® Photodynamic Therapy can prevent the development of skin cancer by effectively treating sun damage and pre-cancerous lesions of the skin. Levulan® is revolutionizing skin rejuvenation methods and skin therapy techniques.

Who should not be treated with Levulan®?
You should not be treated with Levulan® if you have:
  • Skin sensitivity to blue light
  • Porphyria (a disorder of the metabolism that can lead to sensitivity to light)
  • Allergies to chemicals called porphyrins

General Precautions with Levulan®:
The treated lesions are sensitive to light therefore; people being treated will need to avoid sunlight and sources of bright light for at least 40 hours after Levulan® is applied.

What should I tell Dr. Weston & the Azura Medical Spa Staff?
There are other medications that increase sensitivity to light. You should inform Dr. Weston and the Azura Medical Spa Staff if you are using any other medicines. These medicines include:

  • thiazides (used to treat high blood pressure)
  • tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, griseofulvin, or sulfonamides (used to treat infection)
  • sulfonylureas (used to treat diabetes)
  • phenothiazines (used to treat serious emotional problems)
What are some possible side effects of Levulan®?
Blue light treatment may cause tingling, stinging, prickling, or burning feeling of the treated areas. These feelings should improve at the end of the blue light treatment and should end within 24 hours.

Following blue light treatment, the AKs and, to some degree, the surrounding skin will redden. Swelling may also occur. These changes should reach a maximum the day after BLU-U treatment. However, these changes are temporary, should improve markedly by the end of the first week, and should be completely gone by 4 weeks after treatment.

Other side effects at the treatment sites may include:

  • Scaling
  • Itching
  • Changes in skin color
